Psychotherapy & Counselling: What's the difference?
Psychotherapy addresses problems of thought, feeling, & behaviour that are psychological in nature. It addresses the relationship between an individual's past & their present concerns. The term counselling is sometimes used interchangeably with psychotherapy, however it more often refers to the treatment of everyday problems.

What is a "therapeutic modality?
A therapeutic modality is just a way of doing therapy. Most therapists use a mixture of different modalities, depending on things like the client's personality, way of thinking, issues that bring them to therapy, & goals.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
CBT is a short-term, goal-oriented psychotherapy treatment that takes a hands-on, practical approach to problem-solving. Its goal is to change patterns of thinking or behavior that are behind people's difficulties, and so change the way they feel.

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)
DBT is a specific type of cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy that incorporates mindfulness, & was developed in the late 1980s to help better treat borderline personality disorder. Since its development, it has also been used for the treatment of other kinds of mental health disorders. It emphasizes psychosocial aspects of treatment and helps people learn and use new skills and strategies so that they build lives they feel are worth living.

Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART)
ART is a form of psychotherapy with roots in existing evidence-based therapies but shown to achieve benefits much more rapidly (usually within 1-5 sessions). The client is always in control of the entire ART session, with the therapist guiding the process. The process is very straightforward, using relaxing eye movements and a technique called Voluntary Image Replacement to change the way in which negative images are stored in the brain. The end result is that traumas and difficult life experiences will no longer trigger strong emotions or physical reactions. Importantly, clients do not have to talk about their traumas or difficult life experiences with the therapist to achieve recovery.

Solution Focussed Brief Therapy (SFBT)
As the name implies, SFBT focuses on finding solutions to problems rather than focusing on the problems themselves. The client stays in the present and looks to the future, rather than looking into the past. The goal is to help people imagine the future they want to create and then create a series of realistic steps to help them get there.

Psychodynamic Therapy
Psychodynamic therapy involves the interpretation of mental and emotional processes, rather than focusing on behaviour, and looks for patterns in a client's emotions, thoughts, and beliefs that frequently begin in childhood. In this way clients gain insight into their lives and present-day problems.

Mindfulness
Mindfulness is a therapeutic technique, not a therapeutic modality. It is “The awareness that arises from paying attention, on purpose, in the present moment and non-judgmentally” (Kabat-Zinn, 2015).
